Toronto employees among the most vaccinated in Canada

Vaccination rates of Toronto employees are the highest in Canada, according to a report by The Globe and Mail. Data from the Canada Health Act shows that a whopping 88 per cent of employees with a Toronto Public Health position have received at least two doses of measles, mumps and rubella (MMR) vaccine.

Nearly half of these employees received vaccinations, including those who performed emergency medical services. These public health services staff members had to go through a mandatory 20-day immunization protocol once their roles were confirmed and also had to undergo an independent and intensive medical exam.

The report went on to identify schools and other public spaces where a high vaccination rate is likely needed. “Where schools appear to be heading is toward 100 per cent vaccination,” Dr. David Butler-Jones, the chief public health officer of Canada, said. “Our overall rates are still several percentage points below that.”

The report focused on schools, health care workers and school populations. It highlighted schools where 95 per cent of students are fully vaccinated in Grade 8, 100 per cent of Grade 10 students are fully vaccinated, and 90 per cent of Grade 11 students are fully vaccinated. This number drops a bit further, to 81 per cent, for those students graduating from high school.

The Globe and Mail interviewed Toronto Public Health for more information on the data, but a spokesperson for the organization suggested that media coverage had been inaccurate in its reporting.

“This report is based on one day of vaccinations in 2016 for adults; this translates to vaccinating approximately 800 individuals in each day,” the spokesperson said. “As such, this report does not reflect the largest peak and valley immunization rates between 2016 and 2017 in Toronto, when nearly 300,000 individuals received their vaccinations.”
