A tricky example of just why Facebook is a meta-company. You know, the one whose entire history and importance could be summed up as “Open, free, and easy.” No, seriously, Facebook once was an innocent world full of friends, shared info, photos, newsfeeds. You know, like a beautiful, modern society. But slowly Facebook’s been morphing into the modern equivalent of the old-timey Big Board board game, or whatever. And it’s a form of meta – you now see how your friends’ moves come back to you when they do something, which you don’t see in the real world. Just this morning, for example, my wife announced she was pregnant and I immediately checked her status update to see what the mood of her friends was about it. The feeling? A wave of expectation and anticipation that she will be posting frequently, share pretty pics, etc., etc. So, Facebook does this meta thing to us.

The year is 2017, and now a sophisticated move was made to seamlessly implement this new meta structure, where people can choose who reads their stories. And what could be more meta? The boss reader gets to read their stories every day! Facebook’s manipulation theory just blew up – it’s sort of fake news…for a really big, uninformed army of power users who can have a huge influence on the conversation without lifting a finger.
